MasterCard, Visa Can Take Swipe Fees Fight To Top UK Court

Law360, London (November 30, 2018, 3:00 PM GMT) -- Visa and MasterCard have been granted permission by Britain's Supreme Court to challenge a landmark Court of Appeal decision that found the credit card companies set charges at an unlawfully high level that restricted competition.

The credit card giants are taking their battle with U.K. retailers over interchange fees to the nation's highest court. (AP) A spokeswoman for the country's highest appeals court told Law360 on Friday that Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc. can revive their legal battle with a group of British retailers over card charges, known as interchange fees, which they impose when customers pay using plastic.
