Senate Confirms Cooper Partner Who Disparaged Gay Judge

Law360 (May 22, 2019, 6:16 PM EDT) -- The Senate confirmed four more of President Donald Trump's judicial nominees Wednesday, including a Cooper & Kirk partner who previously defended California's same-sex marriage ban by making disparaging comments about the sexuality of the judge who presided over the case.

Howard C. Nielson, a Cooper & Kirk partner and former deputy assistant attorney general under President George W. Bush, was confirmed to a judgeship in the District of Utah by a 51-47 vote. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine was the only Republican to cross over and vote "no," along with every Democrat.
