A Robust Federal Consumer Protection Law May Be Ahead

By Brad Elbein and Linda Priebe (August 20, 2019, 2:07 PM EDT) -- In late July, the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division announced that it would be undertaking a review of "market leading online platforms."[1] The focus of the DOJ's review will be "competitive conditions in the online marketplace." The DOJ's press release states that its investigation will take place "in an objective and fair-minded manner," which probably means that it will proceed with many town halls and conferences and input invited from stakeholders. No specific companies are mentioned in the DOJ release, but many observers speculate that Facebook Inc., Amazon.com Inc. and Google Inc. will be included....
