GOP Tax Law Guides Dems To Future Offsets

By Lai King Lam (September 21, 2018, 6:00 PM EDT) -- On Sept. 13, the House Republican's package of bills known as "tax reform 2.0" cleared the House Ways and Means Committee by a party-line vote. The package containing three separate bills would make permanent the individual and small business tax cuts enacted in 2017, promote savings and encourage entrepreneurship.[1] The House GOP leadership is planning to bring the bills to the floor for consideration when the chamber returns from recess on Sept. 25. The House is expected to pass all three bills even though a handful of Republicans will likely vote against the permanent tax cuts bill — H.R. 6760 — which includes a provision that would make permanent the $10,000 cap on the deduction for state and local taxes. The GOP is banking on the House passage of tax reform 2.0 to give its members an accomplishment to take on the campaign trail before the November midterm elections. How much of a boost it will actually give Republicans, however, is debatable. The latest poll conducted by Politico/Morning Consult shows that public support for the 2017 tax law was at 39 percent for the period of Sept. 13 through Sept. 16....
