Benchers of the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) have set the financial table for the upcoming year, approving the 2026 budget that includes a modest annual fee increase for lawyers and paralegals. Lawyers will pay a fee of $2,080, an increase of approximately two per cent over the 2025 fee level of $2,039. Paralegals will pay $1,037 — with the net fee payable being $1,007 after applying a $30 refund from the paralegal compensation fund. In 2025, paralegals paid $1,023.

The legal profession is going through seismic change as it grapples with things like artificial intelligence, but one issue that has been around for centuries still remains — stress. According to the 2025 Lawyer Satisfaction Survey — which marks Law360 Canada’s third deep dive into the feelings and thoughts that legal professionals have about their jobs — 85 per cent of associates say they are at least sometimes stressed by their finances, along with 77 per cent of those at small firms.

The use of online news content as training data, however, without proper authorization has sparked significant debate. News organizations throughout North America and abroad are arguing that scraping their content both violates copyright law and undermines their ability to generate revenue through subscriptions and advertising. A growing number of legal cases are emerging pointing at the unauthorized scraping of online news and other content to train artificial intelligence (AI) models.

A recent survey of the legal profession is showing high marks on issues like job satisfaction and compensation. According to the 2025 Lawyer Satisfaction Survey — which marks Law360 Canada’s third deep dive into the feelings and thoughts that legal professionals have about their jobs — 63 per cent of respondents report being satisfied or very satisfied with their jobs overall, up from 60 per cent last year.
