A Virginia federal judge on Monday awarded Genworth Financial Inc. shareholders $65 million in attorneys' fees and expenses after they reached a $219 million settlement with the insurance company to resolve a consolidated shareholder class action claiming it made false and misleading statements about its long-term care insurance division.

Genworth Financial Inc. has agreed to pay $219 million to settle a consolidated shareholder class action ahead of a trial over claims the insurer made false and misleading statements about the health of its long-term care business that resulted in a major stock drop in late 2014, Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann LLP said Friday.

Genworth Financial Inc. said two institutional investors that claim they lost $4.8 million in share value after the insurer misrepresented the health of its long term care insurance business are too ignorant of their own claims to represent a proposed class of investors, asking a Virginia federal court on Thursday to deny class certification.
