France Fines 6 Appliance Makers €189M For Collusion

Law360 (December 6, 2018, 6:45 PM EST) -- Appliance giants Whirlpool Corp., Electrolux AB and a handful of others must cough up a total of €189 million ($215 million) in fines to French antitrust authorities for holding secret meetings to jack up prices for refrigerators, dryers and other appliances, regulators announced Thursday.

The group of six manufacturers met up several times between 2006 and 2009 to hash out inflated recommended retail prices for distributors, the French Autorité de la concurrence said, with gatherings taking place on the sidelines of trade association events and at restaurants near the association’s Paris headquarters.
