Local irrigation officials have already made sure that endangered species near the Rio Grande are sufficiently protected, a New Mexico water agency says, warning that any operational changes would imperil growers in the central part of the state, including six Native American tribes.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was sued Wednesday by an environmental group accusing it of violating the Endangered Species Act by failing to stop the destruction of habitat along the Rio Grande, putting three endangered species at risk of extinction.
