Insurers Say EU Stress Tests Create 'Unrealistic' View

Law360, London (October 30, 2019, 2:13 PM GMT) -- Insurers have warned that financial stress tests create an “unnecessarily pessimistic view” of the financial health of the industry because of the way in which they are carried out.

Insurance Europe, a trade body, responded on Wednesday to a discussion paper published by the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority on the current methodology of Europe-wide stress tests. The regulator revealed the results of the last round of tests — an assessment of how well an insurer’s balance sheet can hold up to a range of extreme financial scenarios — in December 2018.
