Pensions Minister Comes Under Fire Over Fossil Fuel Support
Law360, London (July 30, 2020, 4:39 PM BST) -- Climate campaigners have criticized the U.K.'s pensions minister for his "explicit and public support" of retirement schemes continuing to invest in fossil fuel companies.
An open letter published Wednesday and signed by 70 public figures, ranging from lawmakers to faith leaders, slammed Guy Opperman for saying the U.K. wouldn't force pension companies to divest investments in major polluters.
Opperman said in an official blog post at the start of July that by continuing to hold a stake in fossil fuel companies, pension schemes were in "an influential position to nudge, cajole or vote firms towards lower-carbon business practices."
