Data Watchdog Defends Record As 68% Of Fines Go Unpaid

Law360, London (November 5, 2020, 11:54 AM GMT) -- Britain's data regulator defended its record on Thursday after an SMS service provider claimed that it is failing to collect fines against companies that breach its rules.

The Information Commissioner's Office has responded to a claim by The SMS Works, a company that offers text-messaging services to businesses, that 68%, two thirds, of the monetary value of fines issued between Jan 2019 and August 2020 have not yet been paid. The watchdog said it uses all its powers to collect fines and penalize companies and that it can achieve successful results even when fines go unpaid.
