Pensions Dept. Errors Causing Nightmares For Many, MPs Say

By Lucia Osborne-Crowley (November 18, 2021, 2:11 PM GMT) -- The U.K. government overpaid £8.3 million ($11.2 million) in benefits in the 12 months to March 31, 2021, as the level of fraud and error in the system reached its highest level during the pandemic, senior MPs have said.

Parliament's influential Public Accounts Committee said on Wednesday that the money spent on mistakes and fraud in the benefits system doubled during the COVID-19 pandemic. The MPs added that benefits overpayments made up 7.5% of the Department for Work and Pensions' total expenditure in the 12 months ending in March.
