SFO Accused Of 'Volte-Face' In Trial Of Ex-Barclays Bankers

Law360, London (February 6, 2020, 8:01 PM GMT) -- Prosecutors ended up “riding two horses in opposite directions” in the Serious Fraud Office’s case against three former Barclays executives accused of fraud over a side deal the bank struck with Qatar during the financial crisis, the attorney for one of the bankers told a London jury on Thursday.

Counsel for Roger Jenkins, former head of Middle East investment business at Barclays, accused the SFO of a “volte-face” over claims an advisory agreement between Barclays and Qatar was irrelevant because the Gulf state had become a strategic investor in the bank during an emergency fundraising in 2008.
