Carillion was the U.K.'s second largest construction firm, had been involved in some of the most prestigious private sector projects, and was a major supplier of the country's public sector services. While BHS was a British high street institution, Carillion was well-known for its success in securing several prominent government contracts, including the HS2 high-speed railway, and distinguished by its involvement in notable private sector ventures such as the Channel Tunnel, the Royal Opera House and even the Rolls Building. Carillion and BHS both left significant pension deficits, with available estimates suggesting that even BHS's 700 million pound pension shortfall will be dwarfed by Carillion's deficit. With 20,000 employees in the U.K. (and a total of 43,000 people employed worldwide), as well as 30,000 subcontractors owed approximately 1 billion pounds, the collapse of Carillion is likely to have even more far reaching consequences than that of BHS....
