UK Court Rules Meril Infringes Heart Valve IP, But Some Claims Are Invalid

Law360 (September 30, 2020, 9:51 PM EDT) -- A London judge has handed a mixed ruling to Edwards Lifesciences Corp. in its patent fight against Indian competitor Meril Life Sciences over prosthetic heart valves, finding that Meril infringed claims in one patent but struck down parts of both patents involved in the case. 

In a 51-page opinion Tuesday, High Court Judge Colin Birss ruled that while Meril's Myval transcatheter heart valve device was structured in a way described by a claim in one of Edwards' patents, that patent claim was invalid for being obvious over prior inventions.
