Judiciary Gets A Boost From Supreme Court's Brexit Ruling

Law360, London (September 24, 2019, 7:58 PM BST) -- Britain’s Supreme Court asserted the judiciary's power to intervene in political battles in its historic decision Tuesday that the government acted unlawfully by closing Parliament in the runup to Brexit, extending the scope of the courts' powers to review government actions.

In a unanimous ruling, the U.K.’s highest judicial authority concluded that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s actions had prevented Parliament from carrying its constitutional role of scrutinizing government in the “quite exceptional circumstances” of the country’s exit from the European Union.
